Beyond Glamping: Dandelion Hideaway's Commitment to Sustainable Farming

As spring slowly but surely approaches, anticipation builds at the Dandelion Hideaway for the busy season ahead. Despite the prolonged wait for warmer weather, we're gearing up for an exciting time on our picturesque glamping site in the Leicestershire countryside.

One of our primary focuses this season is our commitment to sustainable agriculture. We're eagerly preparing to plant maize, not only to support local feed mills but also to reduce reliance on maize imports from afar.

By growing our own maize, we're taking a step towards a more self-sufficient and eco-friendly approach to farming.

In addition to maize, we're thrilled to introduce sunflowers to our fields. These vibrant blooms won't just provide us with valuable oil; they'll also serve as a haven for our resident bees and attract a plethora of birds, enriching the biodiversity of our surroundings. Plus, we're proud to cultivate these crops with minimal reliance on synthetic fertilizers, instead harnessing the nutrient-rich manure from our own chickens.

Despite the challenges posed by a long and wet winter, our fields have not remained dormant. We've diligently planted cover crops, strategically chosen to improve soil health with their deep roots. Over the winter months, a flock of sheep has grazed on these cover crops, simultaneously enriching the soil with their natural fertiliser.

As we eagerly await the arrival of spring, we're filled with excitement for the vibrant new life that will soon grace our fields. With each seed sown and each sheep's hoofprint in the soil, we're not just growing crops; we're nurturing a harmonious relationship between agriculture and the environment.

Stay tuned for updates as our fields burst into life at the Dandelion Hideaway.

What can beat a UK Summer? Birdsong, beer gardens, Al Fresco Dining. Looking at the weather today – snow, ice and rain – I cannot wait. I have also made a mental note to book abroad for some Winter Sun next year! Who wouldn’t like a bit more money in the bank to go somewhere exotic when we really need it?

Wow 2023 already feels like it is flying by. It has been a very busy start to the year. I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Oxford Farming Conference. Which hosted some inspirational speakers. Samantha Kinghorn MBE, the Double Paralympic Medallist was hugely inspiring in how she has adapted to life changing injuries.

January is always a quiet start to the year, all autumn planting is done, and cover crops are well established. The cover crops provide our maize ground (which will be planted in the spring) with ground cover to reduce erosion and help protect our soils, whilst also adding and locking up nutrients at the same time.
